We got the chance to have a sneaky preview listen to three as-yet unreleased tracks from ONE DIRECTION’s upcoming new album, ‘Made In The A.M.’ – including next single, ‘Perfect’ and album tracks, ‘History’and ‘End Of The Day’. The boys are more involved in the songwriting process than ever before, and this is reflected in the deeply personal tone of the songs and their lyrics. Here’s what we thought of each of the tracks we heard!
‘Perfect’ opens with echoey guitars and a driving bass, sounding vaguely Mumford & Sons-y in parts. The track is co-written by Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson, and the rumours that it’s about Taylor Swift definitely aren’t helped by lyrics such as, “If you’re looking for someone to write breakup songs about.“ Regardless of who it’s about, it looks set to do incredibly. The chorus is as catchy as some of the band’s earliest singles, with lyrics about all the things people dating a One Direction boy could hope to get up to; “causing trouble in hotel rooms” and“having secret little rendez-vous” alongside “going places we can’t even pronounce”. Someone sign us up?
Key lyric: ”I might never be the one who brings you flowers, but I can be the one tonight…“
Despite being musically upbeat, the lyrics to ’End Of The Day’ point in a slightly more introspective and lonely direction. Just “me, her, and the moon” they sing, before massive drums drop into a huge chorus. They talk about love in one of their most realistic depictions so far – “you follow your heart even though it will break sometimes” and “love can be frightening for sure.” It’s reassuring to know that international superstars have the same problems as the rest of us!
Key lyric: ”The priest thinks it’s the devil, my Mum thinks it’s the flu, but girl, it’s only you…“
‘History’, as we all know, is the final track on the album. It’s scattered with handclap percussion and was written by Louis and Liam Payne. It sounds like it’s directed at a specific someone, but the message is a little on the sad side. “Keep getting the feeling you wanna leave this all behind.”Seriously? Who’d be walking away from those boys?! “We could be the greatest thing that the world has ever seen!” Damn right we could. This delivers everything you could hope for in a pop-rock album closer and we promise you won’t be disappointed!
Key lyric: ”You and me got a whole lot of history, don’t let it go, we could make some more, we could live forever…“
